How it works

The method, and the sources behind it

  1. We read your robots.txt like a bot

For 12 AI and search crawlers we work out, by the RFC 9309 rules, whether your homepage is allowed, and which rule decided it.

  2. We knock on the door as AI search

We visit your homepage identifying as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, to catch firewalls and security plugins that block them.

  3. We read what you tell machines

Your schema (LegalService, phone, address, practice areas, linked profiles), llms.txt, sitemap and whether your content shows up without JavaScript.

  4. You get the fixes, pre-filled

A robots.txt block, an llms.txt starter and law firm schema, filled in with what we found, ready to paste.

Disclosures

  • About this tool. This checks whether AI and search crawlers can reach and read your site, based on each company’s published crawler documentation as of November 5, 2026. Crawlers change, some assistants don’t follow robots.txt, and no score guarantees that an AI tool will mention or recommend your firm.
  • Your data. We fetch the public pages of the site you enter, including visits identified as AI crawlers. We keep the scan address, result and a one-way hash of your IP address for 30 days, to cache results and limit abuse. See our privacy policy.
  • Not legal advice. Lawzen is a marketing agency, not a law firm. Nothing on this page is legal, ethics, tax or financial advice, and using this tool doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship.
  • Who made it. This free tool is made by Lawzen, which sells marketing services to law firms. Where it mentions our services or prices, it’s describing what we sell. Results are provided as-is, without warranty; see our terms.
  • Trademarks. Google, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Avvo, Justia and other names mentioned belong to their owners. Lawzen isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by them.

Questions, answered

About the AI Search Readiness Checker.

How do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity find law firms?

Each runs its own search crawler: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity. If robots.txt or your firewall blocks them, your pages can’t appear in their answers. Google’s AI Overviews come from the normal Google Search index (Googlebot).

Should I block AI training bots like GPTBot?

That’s a business choice. Training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot) don’t decide whether you appear in AI search answers, so you can block them and still be found. Just don’t block the search bots by accident when you do.

What is llms.txt, and do I need it?

It’s a short, plain-text map of your site written for AI tools, placed at /llms.txt. It’s a new, optional standard and not every AI engine reads it, so we weight it lightly. It’s cheap to add, and we give you a starter.

Why does schema matter for AI search?

Schema tells machines, without guessing, that you’re a law firm, what you practise, where, and how to reach you, and links your profiles (Google, Avvo, Justia) to the same entity. That makes it easier for an AI to describe and recommend you accurately.

Does a high score guarantee AI recommends my firm?

No. This checks whether AI can reach, read and understand your site. Whether it recommends you also depends on reviews, mentions around the web, your content and the competition in your area.
